As if you need a reason...

I have been thinking so much this week about what I was actually doing on September 11 that now I don't have the heart to write about it.... I've lost my nerve.... Suffice to say I was not at the coal-face, so reflecting on where I was seems rather lame.... just sitting in my uptown apartment watching it on television along with the rest of the world. My daughter was in Central Park with a babysitter, I was anxious for her to come home but my husband thought I should stay in and wait for her rather than head out (when they did get in from the 72nd Street Playground shortly afterwards they didn't even know anything was going on). I was meant to be heading for a glucose test as I was 7 months pregnant.... but I assumed that appointment would be cancelled... though I do remember reading later in Vanity Fair that a gazillion people had called a particular Madison Avenue store on the morning of 911 to put their name on the waitlist for some key fashion item. The world's a funny place.

My husband had called to tell me what was going on and alert me to turn the television on in the first place..... when I say called, in fact he left me 46 messages on the answering machine and when i started clearing the "call me back NOW" messages I thought to myself, oh no he's lost his job. He's in banking, we knew it would happen eventually. However I discovered a few years later that losing your job is not 46 phone messages, losing your job is walking in the front door in the middle of the day and saying "I'm done". That was a week before our third girl was born. Anyway, my husband didn't get home until quite late on that fateful September day, but they were told to stay away from the windows of their midtown office. Mmmmm. Our friend Adrian arrived on our doorstep that night, he had been in NY on business and pulling into the World Trade Center in a cab as the attacks started. In fact he did take a series of macabre pictures that turned out to be a timeline of the plane hitting the first tower. Was meant to just be a snap of WTC to show the kids on his return to Sydney.

I gave birth to a healthy baby girl on 8 November, and as we were leaving New York Hospital, waiting in the cab queue on the morning of November 12 the dude in front of us said OMG there's been another attack. American Airlines Flight 587 had crashed into a Queens neighbourhood killing everyone on board, and some on the ground. So we got into a cab and in his first ever knee-jerk reaction my husband said "this is what we're going to do, you and the kids are going to return to Australia, and I am going to finish up here". Coming from him... well I've just gotta tell you that's not the way he talks. He's more a "captain goes down with the ship" kind of guy. Anyway, by that evening I think we knew that sadly this catastrophe was not related. More of a bonus for the "bad guys".

So we had three more glorious years in the city, until the day hubby came home in the middle of the day... but that's another story. And now I've gone and written about 911, I guess I found the heart after all.

a heart in new york

New York - to that tall skyline I come
Flyin' in from London to your door.
New York - lookin' down on Central Park
Where they say you should not wander after dark.

New York - like a scene from all those movies.
But you're real enough to me
For there's a heart,
A heart that lives in New York.

A heart in New York, a rose on the street.
I write my song to that city heartbeat.
A heart in New York - the love in her eyes.
An open door and a friend for the night.

New York - you got money on your mind
And my words won't make a dime's worth of difference.
So here's to you New York
(Paul Simon)

Some snaps of us when we were only "three girls", enjoying our backyard. I took the Strawberry Fields shot on Sept 11 2002. Where have the last 10 years gone? I have gone to bed every night this week, and woken in the morning, thinking about the 911 widows/widowers and their families. So here's to you.

Eat your heart out Brangelina

I always lament that in all the years we spent in the Hamptons I never clapped eyes on Nacho and Delfina Figueras (frankly I would have been happy just with Nacho). They split their time between Argentina, Palm Beach, the Hamptons, wherever the gorgeous people of the world convene for Polo. I think the images probably speak for themselves?

Sarah Jessica

You really can't deny that Sarah Jessica Parker is very stylish. I don't always love what she's wearing, but one must admire her fearlessness and commitment to fashion. I think she really "gets it" as an industry. This outfit to me is perfection, just very pared down. Why accessorise when the "bones" are that good! She's in London promoting her new film "I Don't Know How She Does it" (www.dailymail.co.uk).

Here she is plugging the film in August Vogue with her gorgeous twins Marion and Tabitha (those names make me want to have 2 more girls!) Divine snaps by Mario Testino. Click here for the Eve MacSweeney article and Mario slideshow.

I'm looking forward to seeing the film with my girlfriends -- I loved the book by Allison Pearson (www.amazon.com), though I can't believe I read it nearly 10 years ago. It sparked a whole genre of "grown-up-chick lit", most famously teaching us to "distress" a store bought cake to make it appear home-made. Brilliant!

lois chiles (via robert redford)

This summer I hunkered down with the brilliant biography of Robert Redford (www.amazon.com). He strikes me as a man who has rarely compromised, and has lived such a life of authenticity... not to mention singlehandedly inventing independent cinema in the US. While such traits may have made him a difficult husband and father the story of his career is utterly inspiring. I am now revisiting all of his old movies, starting with Gatsby (why not!) and of course one of my (everyone's?) all-time faves "The Way We Were".... was there ever a more beautiful human being than Hubble Gardner? Even the opening lines of Hubble's short story, "In a way he was like the country he lived in, everything came too easily to him. But at least he knew it." Magic.

The point is though that I've been reminded how much I adore Lois Chiles..... was she the first to perfect the art of "under-acting"? So utterly luminous as both Jordan Baker in Gatsby and college sweetheart Carol Ann in TWWWere, I'm not sure why she didn't reach more lofty acting heights. Interestingly she dated Don Henley for years... another fave of mine... and as a footnote I did name one of my four girls "Lois". This gorgeous, grainy pic from fanpix.net

Best line from a salesperson ever...

About 10 years ago I stopped buying "it" bags... it was liberating (and has saved me a fortune). I chose a handbag I loved (ok, a Birkin) and stuck with it... despite the best efforts of Posh and the other WAGs, I remain committed. My friend New York Tracey said to me recently "oh you Hong Kong girls still love your Birkins don't you?" I'm not sure that's really the case, I think the "it" bag is still going strong in Hong Kong... And I do appreciate the "are Birkins cool anyway?" quandry, as it's the very last thing you would see Jane Birkin carrying (and is anyone cooler than her?) but anyway, I digress...

The exceptions I make in my handbag wardrobe I specifically justify. I have a Chloe Heloise bag - I had been looking for the perfect "Farrah 70s handbag" and found it about 5 years ago. Still love it. I also love my Goyard totes as they are SO light for travelling, great weekenders, and they are waterproof and I live in the tropics....

So I really only have one remaining handbag vice, and that's Jamin Puech. I bought my first about 10 years ago at Bergdorfs and have loved them ever since.... so on my recent trip to Paris I had to schlep to one of the freestanding stores in Paris... I say schlep cos I dragged my children and husband with me. So with hubby standing outside reading a map, working his tourist look, and 2 of my daughters trashing the joint, I rolled my sleeves up and "tried on" every bag in the store.... The designs are so flighty and whimsical, not "in fashion" just artistic in their own way. Which gets me to my punchline.

For logistical reasons I had to use hubby's credit card to pay for my bounty..... I said to the salesperson "don't tell him the total". Her response: "Oh you're a beautiful woman he knew what he was getting himself into when he married you". God I love Paris. Actually after she said that I threw in one more.
